Westside JCC sent 44 athletes to the 2009 JCC Maccabi Games in San Antonio, Texas.

Excerpt from speech by Jacob Schaffer given at the 3rd Annual Maccabi Awards Banquet
“Maccabi means a lot to me, especially now that I have played and taken part in the experience. I originally signed up for the Maccabi Games to meet new people and interact with other Jewish athletes. But during these Maccabi Games I was taught some valuable lessons about winning and playing the sport I love. I learned how important unity is for a team I also learned how important leadership is to a team, and how those leaders need to always be positive, reassuring, and composed. These games brought kids from different, ages, schools, and regions all together into one unified team to ultimately compete towards one goal. These games taught me what heart and passion are all about. Even in our championship game, when we were down one goal, we didn’t give up, but kept on going with that heart and desire to win. The Maccabi experience has allowed me to gain new and hopefully lasting friendships with kids from not only our Country but from other countries. These games, although short, did something very special. They brought Jewish kids altogether, which is something that doesn’t happen very often. Yes, while competing out on the field and in our different sports, emotion ran high. But those emotions stayed on the field and afterwards when interacting with them they were kind, friendly and social. What I realized is that all these kids and I all had one thing in common, our Religion and culture. We were all brought up on the same values, the same teachings, the same way of life, from one athlete to the next. And for the first time in my life, I felt I belonged regardless of my religion, which is something in today’s world that is so diverse and judgmental, you don’t always find in everyday life. The memories that I made and experience from these Maccabi games, I will cherish forever. I strongly recommend the Maccabi games not only to the returned players but to the player’s friends and family, to whom they can recommend this program."

Excerpt from speech by Arielle Ross given at the 3rd Annual Maccabi Awards Banquet
"Being a girl who is in love with musical theater, naturally I jump at any opportunity to be creative and perform. And yet, of all the musical theatre workshops and extra-curricular programs I have taken, nothing has left me feeling as fulfilled as Macabbi Artsfest. At Macabbi ArtsFest, I was surrounded by other teens who love the same things I love, who knew the lyrics to all the same songs as I did, and who were not afraid to belt some random show tune with me during break. But then, these are all things I have shared in common with my fellow students at other acting programs. However, there was one thing that really made Macabbi ArtsFest different from the rest. The other artists all shared one other very important thing in common with me- our Judaism."

Swim Coach Cara Davidoff, with Maralyn and Delegation Head Dr. Paul Soifer, and Ronnel Conn, WJCC staff
Westside JCC athletes made a strong showing at the 25th anniversary JCC Maccabi Games in Orange County. Our swimmers came home with 23 medals — 9 gold, 5 silver, and 9 bronze — and finished second in total points out of 31 communities (delegations) represented. Our swim team members were Daniella Fischel, Alex Fullman, Hayley Hacker, Aaron Katrikh, Hannah Kogan, Sean Lubarsky, Lindsay Schwartz, and Isaac Wender. For Fischel, Fullman, Kogan, Schwartz, and Wender, all selected to represent the United States at the Pan American Maccabi Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina in December. The Games were also an opportunity to meet some of their American teammates and size up the competition from Canada. Tennis player Kyle Beiser made it into the bronze medal game in his age group, while Samantha Kogan and Perry Weinstein advanced to the medal round in tennis and table tennis, respectively. Perry brought home two silver medals and a bronze medal in individual, doubles and team competitions! Samantha will be on the courts in Buenos Aires as a member of the American junior tennis squad. The other members of our tennis team — Justin Bergman, Seth Brody, Adam Weinstein — had success in doubles play.
